Teachers college invests in better music education

Fontys PABO (Primary School Teacher Training) is getting trainee teachers more involved in music education. This is thanks to a grant from the Fonds voor Cultuurparticipatie (Fund for Cultural Participation).

“With this money, we are able to get trainee teachers to give good music education to primary school children with more enthusiasm, ideas, and skills”, Astrid Venes, Director of Fontys Hogeschool Kind en Educatie (Fontys High School Child and Education), says. For example, students are to follow workshops at art centers in the region. They can also take ukulele lessons so they can accompany the singing in class themselves.

Boost to music class

Fontys is going to give PABO music education a hefty boost. The subsidies are intended to give children a good quality musical education. It also increases self-confidence in the classroom. “It takes time to create, and dare to make, music in the classroom. Thanks to this grant, our students get plenty of opportunities to work on that”, Suzanne Kratsborn, music teacher at the PABO, says.
