Local events raised money for good causes

Sunday, two local events took place to help raise money for good causes. Both events were organized to help children.

KiKa

KiKa is a Dutch foundation helping Children with Cancer. The abbreviation stands for Stichting Kinderen Kankervrij (Children Cancer-Free Foundation).

This year, participants raised over € 115,000. The money will be used for cancer research and new treatment methods.

About a thousand took part in this event to help raise money. Participants could choose to run ten kilometers, five kilometers, or take part in the shorter KidsRun.

Alderman Steenbakkers was present, to put a number of children in the spotlight. This happens during the ‘Kanjerkroning‘.

During this ceremony, children with cancer or who are cured, are honoured. The ‘Kanjerkroning‘ makes clear why research into childhood cancers and finding new treatments is so important.

One in four children still dies of cancer in the Netherlands.

In September and October, further ‘Run for Kika’ events take place. One is scheduled to take place in Amsterdam and the other one in Nijmegen.

Book and record market for children in Haiti

Sunday, a book and record market was organized in Geldrop. The money raised will go towards poor children living in Haiti.

Volunteer organization Stichting Actie voor Haiti (Action for Haiti Foundation) organized this market. The organization has been raising money for children in poverty-stricken Haiti since 2003.

This market lasted from eleven o’clock in the morning till three o’clock in the afternoon. How much money was raised, is not yet clear.
