First American-style ‘Dive Bar’ To Open In Eindhoven

What do hot dogs, cold beer and sports have in common? You’ll find all three these things, and more, at Eindhoven’s first American-style ‘Dive Bar’ café, The Underdog Café. They will be open from next week Wednesday and you can find them at 28 Kerkstraat.

This café boasts an 80-year-old bar, which comes from an old riding school. It has half-a-dozen or so different types of hot dogs and no less than twelve speciality beers on tap. It also has six big screen TV’s that broadcasts live sports events.

Owner, Nick op ‘t Veld, describes the Underdog Café as ‘a sports bar with a dive bar feeling’. He says, ‘It is a place where everybody can feel at home and where different types of people can sit down and drink a beer together’.

The Underdog Café will be open seven days a week, from noon until night. Their one speciality is hotdogs – which vary from the classic German hot dog with sauerkraut and bacon, to a cheese and chili dog with homemade chili sauce. Their other speciality is the beers – The Underdog Café is the first Dutch bar to have three different beers from the Californian Brand, Lagunitas. This beer is available in bottles at other bars, but the Underdog Café is, at this moment, the only place in town where Lagunitas is served on tap.

And then there is the music. At the Underdog Café you’ll mostly hear 80s/90s Old School Hip Hop and Funky Soul. If there’s no live sports on, the real-time videos of the music that you hear will be broadcast on the TV screens.

‘The intended audience is young and working, internationally-oriented’ says Nick. ‘We focus on locals as well as tourists and expats’.

  1. I have to ask – are there also American hotdogs or only European ones? By “American” I mean like Oscar Meyer… Not the Dutch things in cans that are labeled “hotdogs” (because they’re not)? Just curious how authentic it will be…

  2. No, there not so many “dive bars” in Eindhoven anymore.. you have to look for. them cause they are not advertising.. as a dive bar..pubs advertising as a dive bar are fake
