Research into large group of children without a swimming certificate

The municipality has launched an investigation into the relatively large group of children in Eindhoven who leave primary school without a swimming certificate. Says alderman Wedemeijer.

On average, 96 procent of children leaving primary school in the Netherlands can swim. In Eindhoven only 88 percent has a swimming certificate. That worries the PvdA (Labour Party) and the Ouderen Appèl (Elder Party) and they asked the alderman for clarification.

According to Wedemeijer, an extensive investigation has started to find out why so many children in the city leave school without a swimming certificate. What are other municipalities doing better, and which schools score the worst. The schools which perform poorly will soon be contacted by the municipality.

After the investigation, the municipality will make an action plan to ensure that more children will be able to swim. Furthermore, at the end of the month a campaign will be launched to draw attention to the availability of swimming lessons.
