Eindhoven Municipal Council has started taking preventive measures to combat the oak-tree processionary caterpillar. The creature can be quite a nuisance, particularly in the summer months.
From the end of April till the end of May, a number of oak trees from which problems are expected, will be preventively sprayed with an organic pesticide, which is harmless to other insects, or animals which eat the caterpillars.
The hairs on the processionary caterpillar can cause skin irritation in both humans and animals, and irritate eyes and/or airways.
