HELMOND – If Helmond county council has any say, Elly Blanksma-van den Heuvel (52) will replace Fons Jacobs as mayor. She was nominated on Tuesday evening.
Elly Blanksma is currently the financial spokesperson for the CDA in the second chamber. She was one of four women who applied. 17 men also applied for the position. Blanksma is to replace Jacobs from the 1st of November.Blanksma considers it an honour to be the mayor of Helmond. “I am very grateful for this opportunity”.The council created a profile for candidates, indicating that the qualities they were looking for in the new mayor of Helmond, “Involved in what happens in the city, its inhabitants and the business population”.Another characteristic that was appreciated was that the new mayor was approachable and able to interact with all sorts of people. That was the result of a poll carried out by the trust committee by interviewing inhabitants of Helmond.Fons Jacobs, the current mayor, praised Blanksma’s qualities on Tuesday evening.
