Romanian Picnic

July 8, 2023 @ 13:00 - 19:00

July 8th is going to be a warm day. Are you looking for a chill afternoon around Eindhoven to enjoy folk music, a cooking contest, a children show, a small science festival for children, an embroidery workshop, summer games and traditional food? Then join the Romanian Community in Eindhoven and its Friends. In English, Dutch and Romanian we’ve put together a rich program for everyone to enjoy.

We will start at 13:00 with lunch prepared by the whole community. As usual, all the home-made food enters the contest: The Chef of the Summer. Everyone is invited to bring something special from their own cuisine. It doesn’t have to follow some ancient recipe but it has to be home made. All the event participants will get stickers with which they can vote their favourite food. At the end of the day, we will declare the Chefs of the Summer who will get to share their story and, if they want, their recipes.

At 14:00, the children of the Romanian School in Eindhoven prepared a small show for everyone. In English, Dutch and Romanian, they will tell us hilarious jokes that they are very proud of. They will look spontaneous, but don’t be fooled: all jokes are rehearsed during the activities of the weekend school: https://scoalaromaneasca.eu/Evenimente. This marks the end of a rich year for the school and we look forward to welcome everyone back in autumn, both at the school, and at the open activities at Public Library in Eindhoven.

Afterwards, until the evening program, everyone is welcome to chill around the location: find a shady spot (the day announces to be hot) and chat with their friends, use the name tags and make new friends, enjoy summer games, or join the tents with one of the special activities.

One of these special activities is the Embroidery Workshop organized by the ladies from the Romanian suing club: Șezătoarea. Regularly, they meet to work on their hand-made IA, the Romanian traditional blouse. With the occasion of this event, they will display their work-in-progress and will offer a workshop of making small traditional models.

At another tent you can enjoy Science Experiments for children. These are organized by volunteer-experts from the team of the Science course of the Romanian School in Eindhoven. We also welcome guest researchers from Utrecht University who will bring their passion for curiosity and science. In this small science festival, children are invited to actively take part but parents can definitely enjoy it too.

The evening program starts at 17:00 with a book launch. We welcome writer Ciprian Apetrei, who will talk about his volume of philographies “Aici și Acolo” (Here and There), as well as the volume “Povești Călătoare” (Itinerant stories) that he coordinates, with stories written by Romanians from the wide world.

The evening will conclude with a folk concert by Maria De Bruijn-Popescu. She invites us all to sing along with her, as she will give life to songs from the International and Romanian folk repertoire: Beatles, Suzan & Freek, Dolly Parton, Pasărea Colibri, Vali Sterian, or Phoenix.
