International Day of Yoga
June 11, 2023 @ 10:30 - 13:30
The origin of International Day of Yoga (IDY)
Yoga is a 5,000-year-old tradition from India that combines physical, mental and spiritual pursuits to achieve harmony of the body and mind.
On 11th December 2014, the United Nations General Assembly declared June 21st as the International Day of Yoga. The declaration came at the behest of the Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi during his address to UN General Assembly on September 27, 2014, wherein he stated: “Yoga is an invaluable gift of India’s ancient tradition. It embodies unity of mind and body; thought and action; restraint and fulfillment; harmony between man and nature; a holistic approach to health and well-being. It is not about exercise but to discover the sense of oneness with yourself, the world and nature”. Suggesting June 21, which is the Summer Solstice, as the International Day of Yoga, Narendra Modi had said: “The date is the longest day of the year in the Northern Hemisphere and has special significance in many parts of the world.” Millions of yoga enthusiasts around the world have been participating in the IDY celebrations since then.
Objective
IDY aims to raise awareness about the many benefits of practicing yoga as a holistic approach to health and well-being. It is not limited to physical exercise but aims to promote oneness with yourself, the world and nature. The practice of yoga helps to develop positive thinking, inner peace and compassion.
