Pieces for solo instruments, how to use them in impro
January 10, 2020 @ 20:30 - 23:30
€4,5010 pieces for instruments and how to use them in improvisation by Maarten Ornstein. Played by saxophone students of Fontys Music Academy. Part of the Dutch Saxophone Festival.
Maarten Ornstein: Ever since I picked my first instrument I have been improvising; always seeking for new melodies to play and the best sounds to play them with. To me, it’s most natural way of making music.
Improvisation -and the need to express oneself freely, is one of the foundations of music. After all, the first music ever was improvised and it’s still an integral part of many different kinds of music of many cultures.
‘But how do I improvise?’ is a question I get regularly after a concert or when chatting with friends and colleagues. Many musicians trained in Western Classical music have not learned this skill, and feel they are missing out on something very basic to our art. If art is an expression of one’s individuality then improvisation is where that individuality can manifest itself without any restrictions.
