62nd Brabant day in Heeze: Outstanding theatre parade on a warm day

0

HEEZE – It was a warm day in Heeze on the 62nd Brabantsedag but it went smoothly and it was a successful event.

The number of visitors was the same as the last year – around 40,000 guests. They enjoyed the full-day program at the venue amidst great ambience and tasty food stalls around, along with the largest theatre parade of the year that surpassed its previous level of quality and reached new heights.

According to both the various juries and visitors, the quality level demonstrated by the parade kept pace with summer temperature: “Unprecedentedly high” was a common and concise summary. The audience did spread out over the area and mainly searched for shadow. Unfortunately, the two thousand actors did not have that luxury, and that makes our respect for their top performance only deeper. Various thoughtful wagon guides were attentive of the super warm day and provided bottled water. It made the two and a half hours long continuous theatre performance for the parade a little bearable.

This is the top three of the general classification:

  1. The general winner was Ge Wit ’T Oit Noit Nie, (You just don’t know) (Storm of disaster tourism. What?! I have to see that!) about the phenomenon that people go and have a look at a disaster area.

2. Vriendenkring De Rijten De Blijde Intrede (The Grand Entrance: An Ego trip through Brabant) finished in second place. This float showed the tour through Brabant of a new egocentric Duke.

3. Bloed, Zweet & Tranen (Blood, sweat and tears) achieved third place with Michelin; The culinary bond with Brabant. Both the tyre (band) company and the culinary Michelin stars where addressed.

Friends group Ietskes Schif (a little bit tilted), Escaping war camp Vught. Escape for Freedom, won both the Press Prize and the HWV Public Prize (of the Heeze shop owners association). For the first time in five years, the special Pearl Prize has also been awarded again to Skôn for their creation Vincent. What moves him? (Vincent, Wat beweegt hem?)This award is a special one given for exceptional group performance, construction, representation or material use.

An exhibit about occupation & liberation

0

An exhibition, marking the city’s 75th year of liberation, will be open in the Eindhoven Heritage House next Sunday.

The exhibition focuses on the crisis in the 1930s, life in the Second World War and the persecution of the Jews. It also elaborates on collaboration and resistance in Eindhoven and the liberation of the city in 1944.

Photos and films from various archives can be viewed. A film based on the context of 75 years of liberation will also be screened. In it, people from Eindhoven are interviewed about their experiences as children during the war.

During the opening of the exhibition on 15 September, Het Lopend Vuurtje vocal group will play various songs marking protest and peace. Ger de Wind will be giving a lecture about his experiences during and after the war too. He has Jewish-Catholic parents.

The exhibition can be visited for free on weekdays.

World Press photos at TU/e again

As in previous years, the World Press Photo exhibition will be on display at the TU/e. It opens today (Wednesday).

The most poignant photos of the past news year are showcased. Photos that also competed in the prestigious World Press Contest. The best photojournalists and documentary filmmakers from all over the world take part in the competition. The award-winning photos are shown in one year in 100 cities in 45 countries.

In addition to the photos, the TU/e also organises guided tours of the exhibition, a lecture, and a workshop. This is a workshop for students to improve their smartphone photography skills.

For the first time, the photos can be seen in the renovated Atlas building, in the centre of the Eindhoven University Campus. The exhibition is free of charge and can be visited on weekdays until 23:00.

DDW to work more with foreign design schools

The Dutch Design Week (DDW) has said the organisation would be working more closely with foreign universities and design schools in the coming years.

There is already cooperation with several foreign schools, such as a design school in London. This will, however, be further expanded and strengthened in the coming years.

“They can be design schools and universities from all over the world from all continents. We are more likely to ‘scout’ abroad for this purpose. What are the relevant social themes and how do design schools and universities respond to them?”, says Edwin Schenk on behalf of DDW.

Must fit in with DDW’s DNA

The search abroad should ultimately result in the work of, as yet unknown, talented designers being shown during the DDW in the coming years. Work with a social impact that “fits in with the DNA of the DDW”.

There has already been an increase in the number of foreign exhibitors in recent years during the DDW. These come not only from international programmes but also from the technical universities in Eindhoven, Enschede, Wageningen, and Delft.

An Ode to Van Gogh at Glow

0

A special tribute to Vincent van Gogh will be held this year during the GLOW Light Art Festival. The festival will join forces with Van Gogh Brabant and the Van Gogh Museum.

The Eindhoven light artist, Hugo Vrijdag, created the artwork together with the Qinhuai Lantern Festival in Nanjing, China. It is the second time these two light festivals have collaborated. The work will be placed on Lichtplein. It represents a sea of sunflowers waving in the wind. The sounds of crickets and swallows will be recreated. Also, the sound of the common swift is characteristic of Vrijdag.

The sunflowers used for the work are, in fact, lanterns, made according to Chinese tradition. After the work has been shown at GLOW, it will go to Nanjing Light Festival, which will be held in January. The artwork then returns to the Netherlands for an exhibition in Amsterdam.
