Need a bit of help being happy?

Here, in Eindhoven, there is a week dedicated to learning more about how to be happy.

The ‘Happiness for Eindhoven’ initiative was started in 2014. Later modified to Dutch Happiness Week (DHW), it is a collaboration between the Parktheater and the Fontys Hogescholen. The initiative aims to increase knowledge and awareness about, and to work with partners to promote, happiness.

This year, again, there is a multitude of events planned around this event. DHW 2019 will be held from Saturday, 16 March, to Sunday, 24 March. There will be experiences, lectures, and more. But, for the first time, there will be events that expats in the city can enjoy. The week kicks off on Saturday at the Philips Museum where, for €9.00, you can come and see how healthy you are.

During the week, there will be, among other events, free seminars at The Student Hotel, a short play at High Tech Campus, and a morning at the library. DHW week closes with a party at The Student Hotel on Sunday, 24 March. Please see our Events Section for a more detailed programme.

Not just another tech conference

The Brainport region will host a major, free, European start-up event next month.

Beyond Tech, is becoming the premier high-tech conference in the Netherlands. It is hosted by HighTech XL, and registration has already opened. This is a full-day event to be held on Thursday, 11 April, at the High Tech Campus Conference Centre.

This day “for tech innovation in the Netherlands, Europe and beyond” will include Matchmaking Sessions. Here, start-ups will match up with investors and corporate partners for 15 minutes session of one-on-one time. An algorithm uses databases to make these matches. This is then added to participants’ conference agendas.

At the same time, there are also 25 Expert Sessions. These workshops feature high-profile presentations on topics such as innovation, sustainability, and entrepreneurship. The cherry on the cake is a competition. Ten high-potential startups will compete for substantial prizes from companies such as ASML, Philips, and a host of others.‍

The event closes with the Beyond Tech Showcase. This two-hour long session will include Captain of Industry keynotes and startup awards. People will also get a sneak peek into HighTechXL technology-sourcing accelerator programme.

Are you a Maker?

The annual Eindhoven Maker Faire is still six months away. However, ‘makers’ can start registering for this event now already.

From the beginning of the month, so-called ‘makers’ from the Netherlands and beyond have been able to register for this, the largest maker festival of the Netherlands. Last year, it drew 15,000 visitors. This year, on 28 and 29 September, more than 250 makers will present their projects in the Klokgebouw and Ketelhuisplein at Strijp-S.

Call for Makers

The organisers of the event are inviting all enthusiastic makers who would like to showcase their projects on an international platform to apply. Eindhoven Maker Faire is looking for creative people – inventors, artists, software developers, fashion designers, hobbyists and everyone in between.

Registration is free. Everyone who is involved in creative or technological innovation is welcome. Click here for more information about registration and to find the application form.

Then, there is also the Eindhoven Crazy Parade. This event will be held on the same days at the Faire. The Eindhoven Crazy Parade is a parade of crazy vehicles that will wind their way through Strijp-S. Vehicles of all shapes and sizes will be presented by their builders. Visitors can view this parade for free and without a festival ticket. Would you like to participate in this peculiar parade? Then, send an e-mail to parade@eindhovenmakerfaire.nl.

Boomfeestdag (Arbor Day) canceled due to heady weather forecast

0

The planting of 250 trees tomorrow for the annual Boomfeestdag (Arbor Day), is canceled. The event will be canceled due to the expected weather conditions.

Alderman Jan van der Meer was going to plant a total of 250 lime trees with pupils of the Floralaan primary school. That was an initiative of the school’s nature committee. But it is expected that the weather conditions will not allow the planting. So the event has been canceled. A different date is being searched for.

Boomfeestdag is an annual event. The idea is to have every primary school student plant a tree at least once in his or her school career.

Come have a meal and help kids

A war has been raging in Syria for more than seven years now. Peace in the Middle East is still far away, but there is a part of Syria is relatively safe.

In Kobanê, Northern Syria, people are trying to put their lives back together, despite the threat of war. Here is your chance to help. On Tuesday, 26 March, a charity meal will be held at the Cruydenhuisch, 73 Kalmoesplein in Eindhoven. This event, which runs from 18:00 to 22:00, is for the benefit of the Hîvî School in Kobanê.

Hîvî means Hope. This school was established by women in the area to cater for about 25 disabled children. Last year, people in Eindhoven raised €10,000 for this school. This money was used to refurbished and furnish one of the school’s buildings. Now, there is room for 50 pupils.

In Kobanê, people are working hard on reconstruction. But many parents still have no means of income. Their children often have to go to school hungry, with no lunch. Hence, this charity meal event.

The meal in the Cruydenhuisch costs € 12,50 per person, excluding drinks. Registration is required via 040 202 45 83 (between 10:00 and 22:00, except on Monday) or reservations@hetcruydenhuisch.nl.

The evening is organised by the COS31 Social Integration and EINDHOVEN~KOBANÊ, a working group of the Vredesburo.

The Passion to be broadcast in Eindhoven church

0

The Passion will be broadcast on a large screen in Eindhoven this year. The Passion is a yearly theatre production that recounts the final hours of Jesus’ life, suffering, death and resurrection.

The production will take place in Dordrecht next Thursday (18th April), the day before Good Friday, when Jesus is believed to have been crucified. The Emmaus church in Woensel will host a live screening of the production. The broadcast will begin at 8pm.

The theme of this year’s The Passion production is ‘Je bent niet alleen’ (‘You are not alone’). With this, its producers want to emphasise the importance of caring for others.
