Woensel-Zuid Got Talent

Song, dance or poetry. It all came by this weekend during Woensel-Zuid Got Talent, a new talent show in the Eindhoven neighbourhood. At the Emmaus Church, Woensel youth showed off their talents.

Woensel-South pact

The talent show is part of Pact Woensel-Zuid. The neighbourhood has been struggling with problems such as litter, crime and loitering youth for years. With the pact, the municipality works together with civil society organisations to focus on liveability and safety over the next 20 years. “This neighbourhood also often focuses on things that can be done differently or better. With this evening, we want to show what is already going well,” Van Asten explains. “And that is a lot. Especially with the youth, there’s a lot of great things to show.”

Podcast

One of the young people taking part is 23-year-old Thomas. He has his own podcast in which he talks to young people and agencies together about how to listen to each other. “I want to build bridges between people in positions and young people,” he explains. “I do that by breaking taboos and discussing interesting topics.”

For his act, he does one such podcast interview live, with guest city envoy Angelique Bellemakers. He does it all in street language. “With that, difficult topics can be discussed by people who would normally avoid them because they feel the language use excludes them.”

Another participant is 11-year-old Cristiano. He talks on stage about all the things he is already doing for the neighbourhood. “I participated in the Halloween activities and street and contact day. And last year we had an iftar in the neighbourhood,” he says. On stage, he talks about his neighbourhood. So it seems like the kids are on the right track.

Nearly 700 candles on war graves in tribute to allies

0

During Christmas Eve, cemetery De Oude Toren in Eindhoven is traditionally illuminated. Candles are then placed on 686 war graves. It is a tribute to allies who died during the liberation of the Netherlands. A bench will also be unveiled in memory of deceased war veteran Joe Cattini.

This is the seventh time the initiative is being held. Organisers 18 September Foundation and Graves Foundation Brabant have a clear goal in mind. “Let’s reflect together on the importance of remembering and sharing this moment of respect and remembrance.”

Fifteen minutes before the start, the church bells will ring. After volunteers place and light the nearly 700 candles, a subdued ceremony is held. This will include a talk by a Heritage Bearer, a young person who has promised to pass on the war story.

Bench for Joe Cattini

Uniquely this year, a bench in memory of Joe Cattini will be unveiled. The Briton died in April at the age of 100. He was one of the last surviving liberators of Eindhoven, and an honorary citizen of the city.

Cattini was honoured not only for his efforts during the liberation of Eindhoven, but also for what he did after World War II. This included visits to schools to pass on the story of the war to future generations.

The tribute to Joe Cattini and other allies starts at half past four on 24 December.

A myriad of things to do at DDW

Dutch Design Week (DDW) is only days away. Here are some more things you can do during this world-famous design event being held in Eindhoven from 20 – 28 October.

The Dutch Design Foundation is the driving force behind DDW, as well as the World Design Event. The 2018 Creative Embassies stems from last year’s first World Design Event.

Creative Embassies is a community that is tackling future challenges that cities and their inhabitants face. It is made up of, among others, international creative thinkers and doers, business communities, and educational institutions. These Creative Embassies connect themes, challenges, and visions on many topics.

Each domain-specific Creative Embassy forms a hub that covers all aspects of a particular topic. This year, the Creative Embassies are zooming in on six topics – circularity, health, mobility, food, water and urban transformation. Two of these hubs are highlighted here.

Embassy of Health: Designing for Chronic Health

Designers are active in the health care system in many different ways. Whether it be designing serious games for patients and healthcare providers or ‘hacking’ healthcare applications, Through existing and speculative projects, the Embassy of Health shows how designers play a key role in our health and well-being.

One of these design projects is called Carebnb. Here, two designers have created a B&B platform exclusively meant for people in need of informal care on a temporary basis. Carebnb matches these people with individuals offering a room in their homes. Medical care is provided by the local nurse and physiotherapist. The homeowner also helps with daily tasks. This encourages a quicker recovery. The project is supported by the Creative Industries Fund NL.

Biotechnology meets tradition

In another project Kuang-Yi Ku, a resident artist at Waag, Amsterdam, addresses the huge demand for wild animal parts in traditional Chinese medicine. This is a real threat to nature conservation. In his Tiger Penis Project, Ku proposes a solution for threatened species like rhinos and tigers. Why not cultivate the body parts in a laboratory, using biotechnology? This project bridges old traditions and technological innovation, helping to preserve both cultural traditions as well as wildlife.

DDW visitors can find this ’embassy’ in Strijp T+R – B8 at the Innovation Powerhouse, 31A  Zwaanstraat.

Embassy of Water: Ideas for a Water-Friendly City

The Embassy of Water is a platform for water-related design. It was formed to inspire and accelerate innovation. This embassy will become a creative ‘ Water Hub’  – a place where future-oriented collaborations can be established with the aim of achieving a sustainable, water-friendly society.

This year’s Embassy of Water focuses on two themes – Water Sensitive Urban Design (Water in the City) and Nature-Based Solutions (The Power of Water).

This ’embassy”s starting point is the question: How can we turn Eindhoven into a water-sensitive city, prepared for the challenges posed by urbanisation and climate change? ‘This question comes from the urban water management system that is called Water Sensitive Urban Design‘, says Van der Poll, curator of the Embassy of Water.

Very effective approach

‘This approach is regarded worldwide as a very effective solution for tackling urbanisation and climate change problems, such as rainwater problems and heat islands, the places in the city that are extra warm due to too much concrete and lack of green space.’

The avenue of design focuses on the reduction of water consumption, the collection, cleaning and recycling of rainwater and the construction of sustainable drainage systems. In the water-sensitive city, rainwater is no longer led directly to the sewer system, but collected and delayed by green roofs, rain gates, water squares and ponds.

Van der Poll’s vision has been realised in several projects. One of these is Rain (a) Way – an urban design agency founded in 2014 by Fien Dekker. She was inspired during her travels to Africa and Japan. Her main goal is to implement her special tiles in all cities worldwide so people can use rainwater more effectively.

This ’embassy’ will be in Hallenweg – G4, Bergmannstraat 76 (Atelier NL).

Please visit the DDW website for the full programme of these six Creative Embassies, as well as all the other events taking place.

Another venue, MU, will this year organise plenty of activities during the DDW. Join the conversation about design during the Create Out Loud talk shows, take part in interactive workshops, or meet other makers. One of the highlights is The New Newsroom exhibition that is going to be held at the MU Artspace.

The New Newsroom: Reporting Redesigned

There are so many ways to get news nowadays. News apps, videos, podcasts, Twitter feeds, Virtual Reality – it has come a long way since the days of the town crier or the printed press.

How can people use the power of digital technology, big data, artificial intelligence, and social media to create exciting, meaningful content? And how can people engage with the news on a personal level?

These are some of the questions being asked in The New Newsroom. Here journalists, and others, including designers investigate innovative formats and analyse the news. They then present their findings in visuals and exhibitions. This exhibition is not only on during DDW. It is on right now and runs until 11 November.

Visit the MU website for their complete DDW programme.

Flame of Peace to be brought to Eindhoven

0

The Johannes Vianney Scouts from Eindhoven are on their way to Austria. They are to bring back the vredesvlam (Flame of Peace). This flame will be used to light the first torches used in the traditional Fakkeltocht (Torchlight Procession).

On Saturday, members of the scouting group will bring the flame back from the city of Linz in Austria. Hannah, a scout from Eindhoven has been chosen as the Vredeskind (Child of Peace) on behalf of Vredeslicht Nederland (The Light of Peace).

She will receive the burning flame in Linz. On 22 December, in Utrecht, the flame will be spread to other scouting groups in the Netherlands. On Christmas Eve, 24 December, this flame will kick off the Fakkeltocht in Eindhoven.

The burning flame will be kept alight by different families until 24 December, when the Fakkeltocht is to take place. In this way, they can light the first torch along with the city’s mayor, John Jorritsma. This will be done together with the World Peace Flame.

“We will divide the Peace Flame up further among our scouts”, says Marie-Louise Hellings of the Johannes Vianney Scouts. “They will then divide their flames among their family members.”

There will also be a large peace ceremony held on Saturday afternoon in Linz. Here, more than 20 countries will be represented. During the ceremony, each country’s Child of Peace will step up and read the Peace Wish. Each country also has its own flag bearer. “This year, it is, of course, extra special for us to have Hannah on the podium”, says Marie-Louise.

Please see our events page for more information about the Fakkeltocht.

DTW 2019: innovations, kids’ tech events, and lobbying for women

A live robotic surgery, thousands of students getting acquainted with new innovations, and an event to attract more women to the technology sector – this is a selection from the Dutch Technology Week’s (DTW) programme, which starts on Monday.

DTW is a week in which companies and knowledge institutions come together and network and where young people are made enthusiastic about technology. It is a week where visitors can get acquainted with the innovative power of the high-tech region of Eindhoven.

Activities are planned at various places in the Brainport region and beyond. New this year is Female Tech Heroes at the High Tech Campus. Former European Commissioner, Neelie Kroes, and 600 women will delve into the technology sector and the possibilities for women to get started in that sector.

New events

There is also an election debate with political parties in the Klokgebouw. What Europe can do for the tech companies in the Netherlands will be discussed. There is a technology event for young people in Breda too.

In addition to new activities, there are also DTW annual events. For example, this year too, there is the Night of the Nerds in the Klokgebouw. Here 5.000 high school students can experience new technological developments.

Concerti Fetti back in Eindhoven

Jan Smit, Django Wagner and Jan Biggel: these were some of the artists who performed on Wednesday evening in a full Indoor Sports Center during Concerti Fetti. The festival for people with disabilities is back in Eindhoven. A crowd of 4500 visitors sang and danced along.

The festive evening, organised by the Gehandicapten Concert Eindhoven foundation, has since become a household name in the city. The 20th edition was held in 2019, at the time still in the Beursgebouw.

“Visitors only need three notes and two words to sing along to the songs at the top of their lungs. They enjoy it as if their birthday and carnival fall on the same day,” explains Meranda de Laat of the organisation.

‘Nothing is more fun than this’

More than 100 volunteers contributed to the realisation of Concerti Fetti. “Seeing them smile: that’s what we do it for. It’s incredibly rewarding work.”

Fabric market as old as Eindhoven

The fabric market on Tuesday is a household name in Eindhoven and the surrounding area. Longer than many people think: the market has existed for almost eight 800 years, making it as old as the city of Eindhoven itself.

“I came here with my mother as a young girl”, an older lady, who walks around the stalls of the Tuesday market in a good mood, says. But that the market is so old that her great-great-great-grandmother could have walked around here too – she hadn’t expected that.

City rights

According to historians, the market started in 1235, the year that Eindhoven received city rights. “In addition to city rights, Eindhoven also received market rights. That meant that residents were allowed to hold a market, and that farmers in the area were obliged to sell their goods there”, amateur historian of Van Abbe Foundation member, Bauke Hüsken, says. “At that time there was already a road from Den Bosch to Maastricht and one to Cologne. Eindhoven was at the crossroads. People came to the market there”, Jan Spoorenberg, a former archive employee in the region, explains.

Centuries ago, wool, flax and linen were the commodity on the market. “And we don’t know for sure, but that fabric market has been on Tuesdays for a long time”, Hüsken says.

In 2032 the city will be 800 years old. A party at the fabric market would not be out of place. “That’s a pretty good idea”, Spoorenberg notes.

Treasure hunt during children’s holiday week with Mister Rick

Find treasures with a magnet or metal detector. There is plenty to do during Meneer (mister) Rick’s children’s holiday week on the sports fields of the High Tech Campus.

“I really enjoy doing things with children that they have never done before,” says Rick de Wit, founder of Meneer Rick. Today the children go on a treasure hunt, paint mugs and go supping. “It’s nice, because I sit at home all day doing nothing,” says one of the children.

Treasures

Special finds are made during magnet fishing. “I found a coin from 1962. I think it’s from England,” says a boy. All the children have to do is toss a rope with a magnet attached into the water. “All metal sticks to the magnet and you can fish for things,” says another boy. “I have already found 5 cents, a stone and a metal bar.” The metal detectors are also used to search for treasures. “We found something really big. We think it’s a barbecue grill,” says one of the treasure hunters.

Sleep

For the first time, the children can also sleep in a tent. “It’s nice, but cold,” says one of the children. “There is also a lot of noise. Especially from the boys. They keep throwing cookies against our tent, so we sleep in another tent,” adds another girl. The children can choose what time they go to sleep. “We didn’t sleep until 12:30 last night, but we’re not tired yet.”

The children’s holiday week lasts until Thursday.
