Between rock and classic
November 30, 2019 @ 20:15 - 22:00
Euro17,50In what promises to be an evening full of musical and visual surprises, L’Union Fraternelle (or L’UF for short) presents a concert “Between Rock and Classic” playing the Concerto for Group and Orchestra written by Jon Lord, then keyboardist of rock group Deep Purple, on Saturday, 30 November 2019, 8.15pm in Theatre De Schalm, Veldhoven.
L’UF is a symphonic wind band with about 140 members and draws musicians mostly from Veldhoven and the Eindhoven region. It is the oldest established wind band in Veldhoven with a history dating back to 1871. In the Netherlands, amateur wind bands are categorised into divisions. L’UF plays at 1st division, the highest division. However, because they believe that music making is for everyone, they have various other bands under their umbrella at various musical levels. During this concert, both the main band and the percussion group will be performing.
Concerto for Group and Orchestra was premiered by London’s Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and the famed rock group Deep Purple in 1969, which at the time broke tradition with its fusion of rock and classical music.
L’UF conducted by Jacques Claessens, recently named a Knight in the Order of the Orange-Nassau, presents this piece transcribed in 2012 for the wind orchestra, together with a 5-piece rock band featuring the Hammond organ. To get the audience into the mood, a medley of Deep Purple classics will also be played. Part of the evening’s programme also includes the percussion group of L’UF headed by Tim Duif playing his interpretation of Narcotic by Liquido accompanied by the electric guitar and a lead vocal; Thunderstruck and Child’s Anthem, are part of this evening’s programme.
Get ready for a rocking good time with decibel levels you never thought possible at a classical concert.
