No National Design Museum, but a ‘Futurelab’

The Cabinet’s national Cultural Memorandum does not mention a ‘national museum of design’ in Eindhoven.

Minister Ingrid Van Engelshoven presented the Government’s cultural plans in Tilburg. The plans will run from 2021 to 2024. For Eindhoven, it is a relatively exciting document, as on a cultural level, there has been a lot of commotion in the city. For example, the Muziekgebouw has been in financial difficulty for years, and the Stichting Cultuur Eindhoven (Eindhoven Cultural Foundation) is no longer competent to provide subsidies. The question of whether there will be a design museum in the city is hanging in the air like a spectre.

The answer to that elusive question seems to be ‘no’ for the time being. The Ministry of Education, Culture, and Science’s Memorandum mentions nothing about it. It does, however, say that the Government wants to invest a million euros in a ‘Futurelab design and technology’ annually. The question remains whether that lab will be in Eindhoven or not. But the plans for such a Futurelab fit quite seamlessly with the recently published advice on a National Design Museum.

The Council for Culture has been advised to put money into a ‘festival design with an international platform’. The Ministry will also invest one million euros in it every year.

Urban sports

Urban Sports also got a special mention in the Cultural Memorandum. This scene that is relatively lively in Eindhoven can benefit from this. Grant applications may be submitted until 1 February 2020. On Prince’s Day next year, the opening of the new parliamentary year, it will be announced which institutions will get how much subsidy from the Government.

In the Cultural Memorandum, there is also much attention to cultural education. The Ministry is focussing on ‘film education, museum visit by students, music education, and promoting reading’.
