A remembrance plaque in memory of the old synagogue in Eindhoven was unveiled on Thursday in Kerkstraat.
The synagogue was demolished in the 1950’s to make room for a wider road in 1959. The road was never actually built. Two black lines have been drawn around the plaque to show where the synagogue once stood. The remembrance plaque is an initiative of the ‘Struikelstenen’ (stumbling stones) society in Eindhoven. The club also ensured that remembrance stones were placed in the city, to remind people of the local Jewish victims of the holocaust. Local man Ralf Loeuenstein still remembers the synagogue. “I attended the synagogue when I was a child of seven, I went there with my parents, you had to!” He is in favor of this remembrance. “It provides people with a place to remember, it is a fine initiative.”
