Professor Kitty Nijmeijer from Eindhoven will receive the prestigious Academic Society Award.
She is awarded this prize for her pioneering research and the way in which she succeeds in connecting science and society.
Nijmeijer researches membranes, a kind of super-filters. These make use of the difference between fresh and salt water. Salt water has more charged particles.
By placing membranes at spots where fresh and salt water mix, electricity can be generated. Such membranes can also be used to filter medicines from water.
Nijmeijer’s research has been implemented at the Dutch Afsluitdijk, where it has been used since 2014.
The prize will be awarded by the Dutch Royal Institute of Engineers (KIVI), on Wednesday 21 March.
