Merck opens smart glass factory in Veldhoven

The German technology company, Merck, opened a new factory for ‘smart glass’ in Veldhoven. The company will invest €15 million in total in its new branch.

It will produce glass that adapts to circumstances. For instance, glass that will darken if exposed to more sunlight, or glass of which the transparency can be regulated via an app. This way the amount of light that passes through the glass can be precisely regulated.

Merck is the first company in the world to implement this new technology. According to the company, this will provide new possibilities for glass in buildings. Further uses of the glass are in mobile phones or televisions.

Work on the new developments is going full steam ahead in the new factory in Veldhoven. First deliveries are expected next year.

Merck develops a multitude of technologies, ranging from applications for smartphones to innovations in cancer fighting technology. The German company is active in 66 countries and employs 50 000 people.
