A seal was born at the Neunen Zoo this (Friday) morning. Mom Doka and her pup are doing well.
The keepers have not yet been able to determine the sex of the baby seal. There are now a total of five harbour seals at the zoo. This type of seal is common to the North Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
The gestation period for a harbour seal is about nine months. When a pup is born, it immediately knows how to swim. The mother’s milk, with it’s high fat content, ensures that the pup doubles its weight within four weeks of being born.
