Lower turnout at referendum vote in Eindhoven

Around 22% of Eindhoven’s residents went to the polls to vote in today’s referendum on economic and political ties with Ukraine, according to figures from the city council.

Elections typically see a low turnout in Eindhoven. In Rotterdam, The Hague, and Enschede turnout was between half and a few percentage points higher.

The first exit poll was revealed at 21:00 tonight, with 64% voting no. The referendum question was: "Are you for or against the Approval Act of the Association Agreement between the European Union and Ukraine?"

Although the Act is not binding, a majority in the House of Representatives, with the exception of VVD and D66, stated that they would respect the referendum’s outcome if turnout exceeded 30%.
