Many colon cancer patients benefit from Intraoperative Radio Therapy (IORT), Catharina Ziekenhuis (Hospital) reports.
The Eindhoven hospital is one of few hospitals in the Netherlands that use the new radiation therapy.
It only benefits patients that have colorectal cancer where the tumour recurs after surgery or radiation and those who have colorectal cancer for the first time but where the tumour cannot be removed surgically.
Intraoperative Radio Therapy is used internally on patients that just underwent surgery. This way, the radiation does not damage healthy tissue. The use of this technique increases the chances of survival of patients by 50 to 70 percent, according to Catharina Hospital.
