Laid-off employees from the Canadian technology company BlackBerry are welcome in Eindhoven, says mayor Rob van Gijzel in the financial newspaper Financieele Dagblad.
The Brainport area is working closely together with the Canadian high-tech Waterloo region, Blackberry’s home base. The developer of the smartphone wants to lay off 4,500 people, 40 per cent of its global workforce. The company lost ground to competitors Apple and Samsung.
Van Gijzel says that Eindhoven could use the extra technical staff from Canada. Earlier this month, a Waterloo delegation visited the High Tech Campus Eindhoven. The areas want to increase their cooperation, together with their Asian partner. Both communities collaborate and share knowledge in the field of talent, research and development, innovation and investment.
