On Monday morning about 50 hitch hikers left from Eindhoven, heading to Barcelona. They are taking part in the largest hitchhiking race in the world, the Route du Soleil.
It is the first time that the contest has started from the Netherlands. Other starting points are Ghent, Leuven, Antwerp and Brussels. There are a total of 1,300 hitchhikers.
The participants have to get to Barcelona within seven days. The route is divided into stages and the race officials are very strict to make sure the participants are not cheating. Driving with an acquaintance, for example, is out of the question.
The winner of the Route du Soleil doesn’t need to unpack; the winning prize is a ticket around the world.
