Ranomi Kromowidjojo has won the 50 meters freestyle race at the International swimming competition in Monaco. She defeated her main opponent, the Swedish Shara Sjöström, in 24.52 against Shara’s 24.84.
Kromowidjojo chose Monaco because of the strong opponents. This is better for her preparation for the World Championships in late July and early August that will be held in Barcelona. For this reason she did not participate in the Eindhoven races. The German world record holder, Britta Steffen, did not go beyond the semi-finals. The swimming competition is part of the Mare Nostum Tour. Steffen did win the 100m freestyle in 54.01, a tenth of a second faster than the Swedish Sjöström. Barcelona is the next competition in the swimming races series and will be on the agenda for this coming weekend.
