Top cyclist puts TU/e science career on hold

Tuesday, 6 March 2012
Eindhoven – It is not often a top sports athlete to also have a career in science. Professional bicycle racer, Petra Dijkman, 32, from Eindhoven is one of the few, and had – as recent as Monday – defended her thesis on heart valves which paves the way for her graduation from the Eindhoven University of Technology.

Petra is a professional racing cyclist at the Belgian-Italian formation Kleo, Ladies Team. Currently, she spends 18 hours a week on training and 35 hours a week on her studies. She says, “It was a question of good planning.”

However, science has to be patient for now, says Petra. From now on, she will focus all her time on her cycling career.
