Give the gift of poetry

I might enjoy being an albatross, being able to glide for days and daydream for hundreds of miles along the thermals. ~ Seamus Heaney, Paris Review – The Art of Poetry No. 75

Poetry works through its blend of ideas, emotions, and sensations. The good poets know the power of language to create this blend. The good reader also needs to bring something to the table: life experience. Reading poems together and sharing responses can yield enormous rewards. So an opportunity to join a poetry circle might be just the Christmas gift you did not know you were looking for.

In January, a new circle starts at the Volksuniversiteit Eindhoven, this time focusing on Irish poet Seamus Heaney. On receiving the Nobel Prize for Literature, he ended his acceptance lecture with these words to express the essence of poetry:

“… the thing which always is and always will be to poetry’s credit: the power… to remind us that we are hunters and gatherers of values…”

Heaney left a wealth of poems, so a six-week course can only show a few gems. Nevertheless, it will definitely provide ideas, emotions , sensations, and a celebration of the power of language.

Now is the time; two people registering for the circle together each get a 10% discount.
