World Press photos at TU/e again

0

As in previous years, the World Press Photo exhibition will be on display at the TU/e. It opens today (Wednesday).

The most poignant photos of the past news year are showcased. Photos that also competed in the prestigious World Press Contest. The best photojournalists and documentary filmmakers from all over the world take part in the competition. The award-winning photos are shown in one year in 100 cities in 45 countries.

In addition to the photos, the TU/e also organises guided tours of the exhibition, a lecture, and a workshop. This is a workshop for students to improve their smartphone photography skills.

For the first time, the photos can be seen in the renovated Atlas building, in the centre of the Eindhoven University Campus. The exhibition is free of charge and can be visited on weekdays until 23:00.

Beer belly boxing finals come to Nuenen

0

Willem de Louw from Helmond is the current Dutch Bierbuik Boxing (Beer Belly Boxing) champion. This Saturday, he will defend his title at Laco Standbad arena in Nuenen.

The principle of beer belly boxing is not particularly complicated. ‘Our matches are held in a real boxing ring,’ explains de Louw during Omroep Brabant’s radio show, ‘Wakker!’. ‘With our hands behind our backs, we try to floor our opponent by bumping into each other with our bellies.’

Brown fruit bowl

The boxers’ weight plays a major role in determining whether they will win or lose the match. After losing some weight recently, de Louw explains that he is now back in preparation for the competition. He follows the ‘brown fruit bowl’ diet, which consists of ‘a lot of croquettes, a lot of fat food and definitely a lot of beer’.

As well as this unusual diet plan, de Louw says ‘I let people hit my stomach. It makes it harder’. When asked if he experiences stomach ache after a match, de Louw says ‘no, I rub my belly with oil’.

Speaking of his opponent, he says ‘he is clearly a favourite to win, but that will change on Saturday’.

For de Louw, beer belly boxing is a lifestyle, not just a sport. Rather poetically, he says, ‘life is like a frikandel’, a popular Dutch fast food snack made of different meats. By this he means that ‘you have to make something special out of it yourself’.

News outlet Omroep Brabant will be present at the finals this weekend. To follow the live action, head to Zinderend Zuiden. The broadcast will be given in Dutch.

Elderly people to debut play about life during war

0

Most of the actors have never performed on stage before. But in two weeks’ time, the curtains will open on ‘De Weg Naar Vrijheid’ (‘The Road to Freedom’), a play about life in Eindhoven during World War 2.

Under the guidance of director Lars van Asten, a group of local elderly people created the play based on their own experiences of the war. ‘Most are of the age that have experienced the aftermath of the war first-hand,’ he explains.

Anneke Kochx is one of the actors. Since starting this project, she finds herself reminiscing about the wartime more often. She recalls being in hiding with a pastor. ‘I was quite a talker. We made a small hole in the wall and if I kept my mouth shut, I was allowed to look through the hole,’ she says.

In the meantime, the group spend a lot of time in rehearsals at CKE in Eindhoven. Most of the actors can hardly imagine that the theatre will soon be full of people. They are really looking forward to it.

The play will premiere on Thursday 19th September and will run for three days. The shows are almost sold out.

Open up your eco-friendly home

0

On Saturday, 2 and Friday, 8 November, environmentally-friendly homeowners across the country will open their doors to visitors. The seventh edition of the Nationale Duurzame Huizen (National Sustainable Houses) Route takes place on those two days.

Eindhoven is taking part for the first time this year. Whether it be roof insulation, a solar water heater, or making your home gas-free – every factor counts. Do you own such a home? You can offer to open your home by filling in this registration form.

The Duurzame Huizen Route is a platform for people looking for ideas and information about eco-friendly homes. More than 1,300 homeowners share their experiences via www.duurzamehuizenroute.nl. Visitors to the site can not just gain know-how; they can also ask questions.

Get a first-hand look

You can also get inspired by visiting one or more of these houses on 2 and 9 November. The homeowners enjoy sharing how they came to make their specific choices to meet the required specifications. And how things work in practice.

Duurzame Huizen Route’s yearly reports show that 86% of the visitors want to apply the knowledge they gained to their own homes. In 2018, more than 500 homeowners opened their doors to more than 5,000 visitors.

If you want to visit one of the houses on the Duurzame Huizen Route, you can register on the website from Monday, 7 October.

An exhibit about occupation & liberation

0

An exhibition, marking the city’s 75th year of liberation, will be open in the Eindhoven Heritage House next Sunday.

The exhibition focuses on the crisis in the 1930s, life in the Second World War and the persecution of the Jews. It also elaborates on collaboration and resistance in Eindhoven and the liberation of the city in 1944.

Photos and films from various archives can be viewed. A film based on the context of 75 years of liberation will also be screened. In it, people from Eindhoven are interviewed about their experiences as children during the war.

During the opening of the exhibition on 15 September, Het Lopend Vuurtje vocal group will play various songs marking protest and peace. Ger de Wind will be giving a lecture about his experiences during and after the war too. He has Jewish-Catholic parents.

The exhibition can be visited for free on weekdays.

Breakdance WC to held soon

The 12th edition of the World B-Boy Classic will be held on Sunday, 8 September. The World B-Boy Classic forms part of EMOVES Urban Eindhoven.

The EMOVES festival has been split up into different weekends this year. Organisers, Paul van Dal and Niek Traa, are happy with this. “This split allowed us to choose the best dates and locations for our event,” says Paul.

“We did not have to take all the other sports and cultural events into account. These previously all took place together in one weekend. We can now fully focus on our event, and that results in an even stronger event.”

Top event

The World B-Boy Classic is one of the most prestigious breakdance competitions in the world. Every year, hundreds of dancers vie for the more than €10,000 prize money and a place in the Duo breakdancing Hall of Fame.

This championship was first held in 2009 in Rotterdam. It has called Eindhoven home since 2013. Ten qualifying rounds are held worldwide in countries such as Japan, Brazil, and South Korea.

The winners of these rounds will travel to Eindhoven. Here, they will do battle to see who will be crowned as the annual World B-Boy Classic champion. Previous year’s competitions were viewed more than 20 million times online.

During the day, qualifying rounds will be held at Dynamo. The World Final will start at 19:00 in the Effenaar. Although space is limited in the Effenaar, there are still a few places open.

Please visit www.worldbboyclassic.com for more information, and to purchase tickets.
