Ranomi Kromowidjojo returns to the pool

Ranomi Kromowidjojo returns to swimming. The Olympic champion decided to put an end to her career in January of this year and now she will help young talented competitive swimmers with their future top sports career on behalf of the KNZB (Koninklijke Nederlandse Zwembond, the Royal Dutch Swimming Federation).

“I still regularly go to the pool. For swimming, but also because I enjoy talking to young athletes about their lives, their ambitions and the obstacles they face. During those informal conversations, I noticed that I can help them as an ‘experience expert’,”  Kromowidjojo says on the KNZB site. She swam her last competition at the Short Course World Cup in Abu Dhabi in December 2022, where she won six more medals, but will now help other swimmers. “Thanks to all the years of top sport, I know that you are capable of much more than you think, including by having the right thoughts. I am convinced that these experiences will also help me with my next challenge of inspiring others”.

Guiding talents

According to the KNZB, the advice that Kromowidjojo gives to the swimmers is so useful that a mentor role was in the offing. “Together we have come to the conclusion that it is a shame not to use Ranomi’s top sports lessons more broadly and more structurally”, Sjors Lommerts, top swimming manager at the KNZB, says.

“Ranomi will talk to athletes a few times a year at different training locations and also accompany  our talents to some international tournaments. For the time being, she focuses on coaching competitive swimmers, but I do not rule out that she will also be involved in the future and gets to work with talents from other sports branches of the KNZB”.

Renewed Van Gogh museum opens doors

The innovative Van Gogh Village Museum in Nuenen has reopened. The story of the famous painter during the period he lived in Nuenen has a new look. The former Vincentre has been expanded with an exhibition space and a new wing.

The museum was closed for six months because of the renovation. Next Thursday the first visitors can come and take a look. “It has taken a long time, but we are happy that we can open again. The museum has grown 2.5 times in size and because of this we have also been able to expand the collection”, Frank van den Eijnden, director of the Van Gogh Brabant Foundation, explains.

“It’s great to be open again and explain to everyone the Nuenen period of Vincent van Gogh. You actually get to know him as a person and why he made all those paintings”,  Simone van der Heiden, director of the Van Gogh Village Museum, explains.

Potato eaters

The renovation is immediately apparent when you enter. It looks like you’re stepping into the old town hall, but according to Van den Eijnden, it’s really the Van Gogh Village Museum. “The museum can be divided into a number of sections. For example, you first enter his studio in Nuenen where he painted his first works. Then you move on to his masterpiece the ‘Aardappeleters (potato eaters)’. We have arranged it so that you can actually take a seat at the table at which the aardappeleters also sat”.

“Then I haven’t mentioned the light lab we created together with chip machine manufacturer ASML. In the lab, we show visitors how Vincent van Gogh dealt with colours in his work so you can apply this yourself”.

Brainport

Through international cooperation in a brand new museum, the Van Gogh Village Museum aims to attract not only people from Nuenen, but from the entire region. “ASML has contacts all over the world and can share the story of Van Gogh globally. This also contributes to familiarity”, Van den Eijnden said.

Van der Heiden: “Vincent van Gogh is an icon in the region and is known throughout the world. There is no place on earth where you can see so much of him. In that we are truly unique. The cooperation with ASML shows that we can strengthen each other here in the region in order to add something to this region that we can be proud of”.

Queen Máxima will festively open the museum in a month’s time.

First ever wombat cub in Netherlands born in Best

At BestZOO zoo in Best, a young wombat showed itself for the first time on Monday by peeking out of its mother’s pouch. This makes the mysterious animal the first wombat born in the Netherlands. “Very unique”, Jos Nooren, the owner of BestZOO, said.

An observant visitor to BestZOO took a fascinating picture. A small furry animal pushes aside the mother’s pouch with its paw and peeks out. “This wombat shows itself clearly and a bit longer for the first time, but we have no idea when the animal was born”, Nooren explains. “The animal could be four, five or even six months old”.

The Australian marsupial is unique for several reasons. For one, it is the only animal with square turds, this has to do that the animal squeezes the nutrients out to the last bit. A young is tiny at birth, about two centimetres tall. After birth, the animal remains in its mother’s pouch for six to seven months.

Peep

Like other burrowing marsupials, the pouch sits more to the rear so the cub is not buried in sand while the mother digs in the ground. It is waiting for the animal to show itself one day. This happened on Easter Monday in Best. “We had already seen the little animal itself peek out of the pouch cautiously once. We did not want to announce this right away, because then we would have to disappoint many visitors who would not see the cub. After all, young wombats rarely show themselves”, Nooren confessed.

On Monday, the first visitors saw the wombat. Still, it remains a mysterious animal, according to its owner. “Very little is known about the species”. That’s not surprising. Zoo owner Nooren had a first for the Netherlands when he brought wombats from Australia to Best two years ago. That didn’t go easily. The Australian government had to approve the arrival and stay of the critters, in every detail.

Waiting

“In the world only a limited number of zoos have the animal. So births are also rare in captivity. What will happen to the young wombat now remains to be seen. “When the mother has enough milk, the pouch becomes too heavy and then the animal will come out. For now it remains to be seen when this will happen”.

Fabric market as old as Eindhoven

The fabric market on Tuesday is a household name in Eindhoven and the surrounding area. Longer than many people think: the market has existed for almost eight 800 years, making it as old as the city of Eindhoven itself.

“I came here with my mother as a young girl”, an older lady, who walks around the stalls of the Tuesday market in a good mood, says. But that the market is so old that her great-great-great-grandmother could have walked around here too – she hadn’t expected that.

City rights

According to historians, the market started in 1235, the year that Eindhoven received city rights. “In addition to city rights, Eindhoven also received market rights. That meant that residents were allowed to hold a market, and that farmers in the area were obliged to sell their goods there”, amateur historian of Van Abbe Foundation member, Bauke Hüsken, says. “At that time there was already a road from Den Bosch to Maastricht and one to Cologne. Eindhoven was at the crossroads. People came to the market there”, Jan Spoorenberg, a former archive employee in the region, explains.

Centuries ago, wool, flax and linen were the commodity on the market. “And we don’t know for sure, but that fabric market has been on Tuesdays for a long time”, Hüsken says.

In 2032 the city will be 800 years old. A party at the fabric market would not be out of place. “That’s a pretty good idea”, Spoorenberg notes.
