The plan to have entrepeneurs decide on the number of shopping Sundays will be stuck to. There were doubts about the legal feasibility, but the resolution will definitely be carried out next year.
Alderman List states that municipal law allows things to be regulated this way and the Association of Dutch Municipalities has advised positively on the matter. The Eindhoven city council has accepted that explanation.
From January 2014 the majority of entrepreneurs in a shopping area will determine the number of shopping Sundays every year. So, there may be as many as 52, but also 26 or none at all. If a business owner does not stand by the agreements in a shopping area, the municipality is supposed to take action. An evaluation of how the new regulation will turn out is scheduled in 2015.
Since last July the state has allowed municipalities to determine the number of shopping Sundays themselves.
