The Aa and Maas Water Board has measured and reported high concentrations of blue-green algae in the Eindhoven Canal. According to the water board, contact with the water can cause health problems. This applies to both people (especially children) and pets.
Algae blooms
Recent weather conditions have caused algae to multiply rapidly in the canal. The result of these ‘blooms’ is that the algae can then release toxins. In the event of contact or ingestion, there is a risk of skin irritation, dizziness, breathing problems and serious stomach and intestinal complaints.
Water recreation
People should also take blue-algae into account when doing water sports, such as canoeing, rowing and fishing. The water board does not recommend recreation in the water.
Blue-green algae has been present for some time in parts of the Zuid-Willemsvaart canal, the Wilhelminakanaal and the Donkervoortseloop, but not in the such elevated quantities.
