ASML has chosen to locate its new research HQ for nanolithography in Amsterdam.
The chip manufacturer, based in Veldhoven, will join forces with the Foundation for Fundamental Research on Matter (FOM), the University of Amsterdam (UvA), the Free University (VU) and the Dutch organisation for scientific research (NWO).ASML chose Amsterdam, the other contenders were TU Eindhoven and the universities of Nijmegen and Aachen. The new institute for nanolithography will focus on specialist research for the international semiconductors industry. The institute will have its own premises in the Science Park in Amsterdam. It will also have its own professors and room for around 100 PhD students. ASML will invest around 30 million Euros over the next ten years. This means they will cover a third of the costs themselves. The UvA and VU will contribute 12.5 million together, the FOM and NWO will invest 25 million over the ten year period. The city council of Amsterdam has reserved a starting capital of 5 million Euros. The institute will be launched in the third quarter of 2013 and must be fully and independently operational by 2015.
