EINDHOVEN – Catharina hospital is starting a new way of treating breast cancer, using so-called Intraoperative Radiotherapy (IORT).
This therapy involves surgical removal of the tumor, immediately followed by electron radiation of that part of the breast, hereby saving the underlying healthy tissue. It only takes an hour and a half, and the patient is discharged that same day.Not all patients with breast cancer can benefit from this therapy. It does not work when the tumor is metastasized.
