Schoolyard orchestra at elementary school De Boog

An orchestra of about 300 people will perform elementary school De Boog’s schoolyard on Thursday. Pupils at the school have spent the week rehearsing on instruments they created themselves.

The students are studying in workshops run by Fort van de Verbeelding (Fort of the Imagination), an organisation that regularly provides do-it-yourself orchestra workshops at elementary schools throughout the Netherlands. Pupils create instruments out of cheap materials such as cans, rice, and bottles before learning how to play them.

The school received this workshop as a gift from the parent council. “We’ve been economical and had funds left over,” teacher and parent council member Ingrid van der Crommert said. “And that money is for the children of course.”

The schoolyard orchestra will perform at elementary school De Boog in Tongelre on Thursday 28 September at 14:30.
