For the first time in weeks, the number of corona infections is no longer increasing. More than 67,000 people were tested positive in Brabant last week. A decrease can be seen for the first time throughout the nation. But, the number of corona patients occupying hospital beds is increasing.
There are considerably fewer corona infections than in the previous week. At that time, there were more than 90,000 new corona cases in Brabant. But those figures were misconstrued because a huge backlog from the previous weeks was adjusted in one go.
Decrease in numbers
This week there are 67,678 new corona cases. That is slightly more than the record from two weeks ago, before the catch-up. There is also a decrease nationally. Last week, more than 800,000 new corona infections were detected due to the catch-up. This week, the number of infections throughout the country is still slightly above half a million.
Hospitals
Meanwhile, the number of patients with a corona infection in Brabant hospitals continues to rise slowly but persistently. There were 227 corona patients on Tuesday, a week ago there were 214. The number of patients in the ICU remains about the same. That number is around 25.
Nationally, too, the pressure on the nursing wards in the hospitals is increasing. This is clear from the data from the National Coordination Center for Patient Spread (LCPS). Throughout the country, there are 1656 patients with corona in the hospital. Last week at this time there were 1580. Meanwhile, the number of patients in the intensive care is decreasing slightly: there were 181 corona patients on Tuesday, compared to 226 a week earlier.
An important part of the patients admitted who have tested positive for the coronavirus is in hospital for a different reason. This could be, for example, people who come to the hospital for heart or abdominal complaints.
The LCPS makes no distinction in the hospital figures between patients who have been admitted because of corona or for whom this is determined later. So some patients who have been admitted for other ailments could also become positive for COVID-19. This could lead to a different angle to the statistics.
