Neighbourhood surprise delivery man Aydin with party

0

New shoes, a dress or a book, Aydin Aytekin has been delivering packages in the Woenselse Heide for almost fifteen years. He and his bus have now become such an indispensable part of the Eindhoven neighbourhood that the local residents surprised him with a party. “I always know what to say but in this situation I didn’t know how to react.”

And that surprise was not without reason, because in the eyes of the neighbourhood he is more than a delivery man. “I remember him bringing my Christmas package, but no one was home. Then he walked to Lidl, where my wife works, to give it to my wife,” says a local resident. Resident Jessica Faassen confirms that Aydin always goes the extra mile. “If you’re not there, he will send a message or honk if he has a package for you.”

Because of that commitment, a surprise party was organised for him. “You often see negative remarks about delivery people online but they deserve be put in a positive light for once,” Jessica explains. When Aydin arrived at the party, he was speechless for a moment. “It was really a very special experience.” The delivery man was showered with gifts: a beer package, chocolate and vouchers. “It wasn’t even about the gifts for me, the thought behind it was just very special.”

Aydin was very happy with the surprise party and hopes to continue working in the area until his retirement. “This neighbourhood is very special. I have worked in many neighbourhoods in Eindhoven, but I think this is the best.”

Watch here: the carnival church mass of Lampegat

Singing together and having fun, but also dwelling on life and being together. That is the Carnival Mass of Lampegat. It is a tradition and this year Catharinakerk was full again. “We do this by and for us”.

Imagine a mass in church during Carnaval, especially dedicated to Carnaval. In Lampegat (Eindhoven) it is possible. It is a catholic event after all.
Carnival is originally a Catholic celebration. It celebrates the beginning of Lent. This is the period of fasting for forty days before Easter, which begins on Ash Wednesday. To properly “survive” Lent, a feast is celebrated in the days before Ash Wednesday; Carnaval!

Vur en Dur Mekaor

Every year a Carnaval slogan is chosen. This year for Lampegat it is: ‘Vur en dur mekaor’. Brabant dialect for for and by each other and also mixed up together.

Watch below for the video impression of the Carnival Mass, with speeches, music, humor and a prayer:

Dynamo Metalfest; full day of new and old heavy metal bands

0

On July 14, 2018 the 4th edition of the Dynamo Metalfest will take place at the ‘IJssportcentrum’ (the semi covered ice-skating rink).

It’s a friendly Heavy Metal festival with a mix of some bigger names, iconic older bands, and upcoming new ones.

The Metalfest is the legacy of the legendary Dynamo Open Air (DOA) festival. This festival (organized by the heavy metal department of youth society Dynamo) started as a free festival in 1986, behind the original Dynamo building on a parking lot at Smalle Haven. After the first few editions with 7000-12000 spectators, the festival outgrew the space and moved to the ‘IJssportcentrum’ where it expanded further, and started to ask a modest contribution from the visitors.

Also that venue was outgrown, so it moved to the Welschap airbase (Eindhoven Airport), where it became a 3-day festival, with huge camping ground and over 100.000 visitors. It became national news when the many visitors (from all over the world but many from Germany), congested the roads around the airbase and north of Eindhoven, which resulted in massive traffic jams, that lasted over 24 hours. Some people who were stuck started their BBQ’s next to the motorway. By that time the festival was not only the favourite of the many visitors, but also of many of the bands, who played in local pubs in the area the days just before or after the festival.

After those legendary years at the airbase, that made Eindhoven temporarily the capital of the Heavy Metal world, the festival moved to different places, mostly close to Eindhoven, but also around Nijmegen. Big and promising bands kept performing, many of them on several editions. And now its back in Eindhoven, still against a modest price, to give you all the opportunity to see some great rocking bands, experience the relaxed atmosphere and perhaps sense some of its glorious past.

Entrepreneur and rally driver Jan de Rooy passed away

Jan de Rooy has passed away. The former rally driver, winner of the Dakar Rally and transport entrepreneur, died on Tuesday at the age of 80.

“After a very short illness, our dad, husband and grandfather passed away peacefully and was reunited with our great love, Annie. He has dedicated 65 years to his transport company De Rooy, which celebrated its centenary last year”, the family business said in a response.

The Eindhoven region has lost one of its most notable transport entrepreneurs. Jan de Rooy was born in Eindhoven on 19 February, 1943. His father Graad had been running the transport company for years, which Jan, then 22 years old, took over in 1965. He had fourteen trucks at the time, which eventually became four hundred. His brother Harry also entered the transport world and started De Rooy Logistics, which still transports parts for the DAF factories.

Rallycross

That is also where most people know Jan de Rooy from: racing DAFs. He started rallycrossing in 1969, not in trucks, but cars. De Rooy managed to win several Dutch titles and international podium places, especially in his DAF 55, until he switched to trucks in 1982 at the request of DAF itself.

The manufacturer wanted Jan to participate in Paris-Dakar, a desert race across Africa to the Senegalese capital Dakar. There he quickly got the nickname ‘De Beer’ (‘the bear’) and that did not only refer to his large stature. Fearless and extremely agile, he drove his converted trucks faster and faster through the desert.

Rally winning trucks

De Rooy built special trucks for the desert rally. For example, he turned two trucks into one, but with two engines and two cabins: the double header in 1984. Things really got serious after the introduction of the DAF Turbo Twin ll in 1986, a truck with two engines that together delivered more than a thousand horsepower.

In 1987 he became winner of the truck classification. His lead over the number two in that class was no less than fourteen hours. De Rooy even finished eleventh in the general classification, among the rally cars. That left him wanting more, because the driver from Son wanted to compete with the rally cars.

Dramatic accident

Jan de Rooy was given a completely free hand by DAF in 1988 to win the general classification. The result was the 1200 hp (horse power) X1. The images in which the DAF truck overtakes the car of top driver Ari Vatanen are iconic. De Rooy also deployed a second truck, but it overturned. The accident claimed the life of Kees van Loevezijn and driver Theo van de Rijt was injured. DAF withdrew from the rally and Jan de Rooy would not appear again in Paris-Dakar for years.

His son Gerard managed to persuade him to participate again from 2002, but in 2009 Jan de Rooy finally stopped participating in the ‘Dakar’. He felt that he could not tolerate his employees to have such an expensive hobby during the economic crisis. Moreover, he did not agree with the rally being moved from Africa to South America.

Succession

Son Gerard and daughter Anneke de Rooy have been at the helm of the transport company since 2010. Something their father Jan was very proud of. There was also follow-up as a victor in the Dakar Rally. First in 2007 when cousin Hans Stacey won the truck rally. In 2012, son Gerard finally managed to win. That was particularly emotional for father Jan, 25 years after his own victory. In 2016, his son won a second Dakar title in the trucks.

Jan de Rooy no longer followed the Dakar Rally in recent years. He lived a relatively secluded life in Middelbeers with his partner.

New liberation tree for Irisbuurt

0

The Irisbuurt (Iris neighbourhood) in Stratum is to get a new liberation tree. It will be planted this evening (Wednesday) just before the liberation parade starts.

The old tree was blown over during a storm earlier this year. That tree was planted in 1945. On a stormy Tuesday evening in June, the colossal tree was torn out of the ground, roots and all.

Irisbuurt’s children will plant the new tree. Their fathers and grandfathers helped plant the previous tree when they were children themselves. The tree-planting ceremony starts at 18:30. It should take about half an hour. Afterwards, those interested can go to the torchlight parade at Stadhuisplein.

Accelerating our Smart Society @ High Tech Campus, Eindhoven

In recent years, we have seamlessly progressed towards connected-communities. As such, an ever-increasing wave of new smart products is meshing into our lives. Welcome to the new era of Smart Society.

Eindhoven’s High Tech Campus (HTC) currently holds the top spot on Innovation in Europe. As a matter of fact, HTC is quickly becoming the driving force on several key technologies in the global arena.

On 9th November 2018, HTC hosted the very first “High Tech Next: Accelerating our Smart Society”. HH Constantijn van Oranje’s presence clearly marks the sheer importance. He proudly shared his views on the ground-breaking technologies and leadership in The Netherlands.   It was a full-day event, with several world-class speakers from technology giants such as imec, Huawei, Philips, TomTom, IBM, and VRee. Coupled with enthusiastic questions from the audience, we had a remarkable experience.

Smart society

What is a Smart Society? Does it frighten some of us? Indeed, this was the starting point of the day, with John Baekelmans. He mesmerized us with examples of city planning at Antwerp, where he is launching his trials. The “smart zones” are fitted with cameras and intelligent lighting. Everything is connected and working together to enhance social lives in the neighborhood, whilst maintaining personal privacy. He shared his vision of the distant future with connected technologies embedded in our daily lives. We would have healthier lives. And all the more with intelligent infrastructure, we would be able to prevent floods, traffic jams and improve air quality. In short, he prepared us for worry-free life in the near future.

In the last years, we see that Data Traffic has more than tripled. However, a tenfold increase is predicted in the coming 5 years. Integrated healthcare, connected home appliances, robotics, drones, driverless cars etc will demand a new infrastructure. Fortunately, the upcoming 5G wireless system addresses this point. This is the efficient platform necessary to manage this futuristic landscape. Thankfully, we had Jurjen Veldhuizen and Jeroen Thijsen, to reassure us. Yes, we are on track with the right technology for the coming years.

Driverless Cars

How could we discuss Smart Society, without touching on driverless cars? We had the pleasure of Harold Goddijn, to share his views on “Mapping the Road to Autonomous Driving”. Eventually, the driverless car would be a connected system of “car-cloud-car” loop. This would be a live-feed system to optimize the journey, with time, energy and road safety. Wonder if we would still need a driving license?

Artificial intelligence is the future

Virtual Reality (VR) is not just for gamers. Menno Bischops shared several examples on successful applications of VR. Particularly, his system focusses on value-for-money.  He proudly shared that the Dutch military was using his system for training purposes. Moreover, Bischops sees huge potential opportunities with VR adapted for many other industries and applications.

But now, are we losing ourselves? Are we in control with all these daunting artificial intelligence-based technologies? Though many worry about the impact, Christian Kromme is positive. He explained the parallels between the 7 phases in human evolution to the 7 phases in our technological evolution. He believes that Artificial Intelligence (AI) will be the tsunami that brings us into a new era. Furthermore, this new technology will advance humanity ten times more than any of the previous technological phases.  More importantly, he reassures us that we are heading towards a more meaningful and purposeful future. Perhaps to start all over again, when we colonize other planets!

Sign-up early for the upcoming events at the High Tech Campus.

See you there!

DDW to work more with foreign design schools

The Dutch Design Week (DDW) has said the organisation would be working more closely with foreign universities and design schools in the coming years.

There is already cooperation with several foreign schools, such as a design school in London. This will, however, be further expanded and strengthened in the coming years.

“They can be design schools and universities from all over the world from all continents. We are more likely to ‘scout’ abroad for this purpose. What are the relevant social themes and how do design schools and universities respond to them?”, says Edwin Schenk on behalf of DDW.

Must fit in with DDW’s DNA

The search abroad should ultimately result in the work of, as yet unknown, talented designers being shown during the DDW in the coming years. Work with a social impact that “fits in with the DNA of the DDW”.

There has already been an increase in the number of foreign exhibitors in recent years during the DDW. These come not only from international programmes but also from the technical universities in Eindhoven, Enschede, Wageningen, and Delft.
