The Safety Board has found a problem with the automatic landing system for airplanes. The problem came to light during a landing at Eindhoven Airport.
A Boeing 737 proceeding to land using the automatic landing system was surprised by a strange response. The nose of the plane rose, causing the aircraft not to descend, but to ascend. This can lead to a large decrease in speed that can be very dangerous for an aircraft, causing it to fall from the sky.
In the case at Eindhoven Airport, the pilots were able to resolve the problem, but this has led to a global awareness of a malfunction. Many airports around the world have the same landing system as in Eindhoven.
The Safety Board is further investigating the problem using the aid of simulation.
