The D66 and DENK political parties want an alternative to Zwarte Piet in Eindhoven.

These local parties have filed a motion that rootveegpieten (soot Pieten), regenboogpieten (rainbow Pieten) or alternatives be used at the Sinterklaas‘ upcoming arrivals in the city. They are following the example of the larger cities in the Randstad region. Here, black face paint, frizzy hair, and red lips are no longer feature. Those opposing Zwarte Piet deem these features to be offensive.

No more Zwarte Piet decorations
DENK and D66 have asked the City Government to enter into discussions with the parade committee and others concerned. They must make it an ‘inclusive Sinterklaas party’. Because ‘no one should feel excluded from public festivities’. Furthermore, according to the parties, retailers should stop using the traditional Zwarte Piet decorations in their shop windows.

The motion was discussed in the City Council meeting on Tuesday evening.
