Doctor: pre-bowel surgery exercise reduces risk of complications

If people who have to undergo a colon cancer operation, improve their physical condition before surgery, there is a reduced chance of complications during the procedure. The patient also recovers faster after the operation.

This is what Dr Stefan van Rooijen of Maxima Medical Centre (MMC) says. He was awarded a PhD on this topic on Tuesday.

According to Van Rooijen, proper preparation is very important. This means physical strength and conditioning training. But “extra protein and vitamins, mental support, and stopping smoking also lead to a faster recovery”.

The most significant complication in colon cancer operations is the so-called anastomotic leaks. The chance of that can be reduced by the patient being well-prepared, physically. MMC surgeons had already started this course of action and observed, among other things, that the number of leaks decreased and that patients’ hospital stays were considerably shorter. This also ensures that medical costs are limited.
