TU/e is ranked 49th for engineering in the ARWU ranking of the best universities worldwide published last weekend. In respect of the ARWU sub-ranking for Computer Science, TU/e appears in the 51 to 75 place range. In both areas, TU/e is the highest ranked Dutch university.
For the Chemistry sub-ranking TU/e appears between ranking 101 and 150, the third-ranked Dutch university behind only Groningen (51-75) and Utrecht (76-100).
The official name of the ranking is the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), although it is often referred to as the Shanghai ranking. It is regarded as one of the leading ranking lists for universities worldwide. ARWU decides on the ranking position as well as the position in the related sub-rankings by looking at aspects such as the number of alumni and staff that have won a Nobel Prize or a Fields Medal, the number of highly cited scientists and academics along with the number of publications in Nature of Science.
In the general ranking of all universities, non-engineering included, TU/e has consolidated its position, moving up five places from 320 to 315.
