The Geriatrics Department of the Catharina Hospital has an outbreak of the Norovirus, a severe form of gastroenteritis.
The management immediately took steps. Patients who suffer from stomach flu are isolated from the rest. They are only treated by carers who are not getting in contact with other patients. They are also required to wear protective clothing and wash their hands afterwards.
Visitors also have to deal with special actions. They are only allowed to visit infected patients if they wear protective clothing. And they should, as the caregivers, thoroughly wash their hands. In addition, the toilets are cleaned several times a day as precaution.
According to the spokesman of the Catharina Hospital many hospitals are infected with the Norovirus in the period from November to March. The stomach flu usually disappears after a few days.
