VDL participation in largest telescope in the world

The VDL Group will contribute to the construction of a large telescope in Chile. The telescope will explore and focus on scientific discoveries in the field of planets, the composition of nearby galaxies and the deep universe.

It is being built in cooperation with TNO Delft and Nova. In 2010 VDL and TNO already built prototypes for the support structure.

VDL is the supplier of the 39 meter high mirror. This mirror consists of small pieces. All the pieces must be assembled together. The continuous correction of all the pieces is done by 12 engines simultaneously.

In the second phase the telescope will be actually built. For the first phase 1 billion euros is allocated.
