The VVD in debate on consolidation of local councils

The VVD and the the ‘Ouderen Appel’ party (elderly appeal) want a regionwide discussion to reorder South East Brabant to one municipality. That was discussed during a debate on Tuesday evening at the city hall on regional cooperation.

The VVD would like to debate on reclassification of the region. At the debate, the Eindhoven council discussed the new Metropolis Eindhoven Region (MRE), the successor of the SRE. From next year, 21 regional municipalities will work on further cooperation in the field of economy, planning and infrastructure.

A majority of the Eindhoven politicians is behind this plan. Also the other councils in the region area valuating the potential this month. A few municipalities are still in doubt, especially Valkenswaard. The local Valkenswaard politicians fear the Eindhoven council will get too much power, and that the importance of the small municipalities is insufficiently represented.

The VVD and the ‘Ouderen Appel’ in Eindhoven see the MRE only as suggestions to reclassify the smaller towns to one municipality. The two opposition parties believe that the interests of the region as a whole is in the region’s best interest. In The Hague and international arena, a consolidated Eindhoven region will have more influence, and that would also benefit the small municipalities.
