Icebuilders TU/e busy with preparations in Finland

In Finland icebuilders from the TU/e are busy with preparations to build a replica of the famous Sagrada Familia (Barcelona) in ice. They use ice that is reinforced with wood fiber, Pykrete.

"A few small igloos and a colored blob of ice have already been made" according to Arno Pronk from the Finnish village Jukaa. The students are also busy plotting the contours of what should become the Ice Basilica.

Pronk: "The temperature is rising a bit now, so after New Year’s Eve, we really get started. Hopefully it will be cold enough then."

Eventually the Icy Sagrada Familia should be 30 meters high. In the evening the towers and domes will be illuminated from within. In the second week of January, the basilica should be ready.
