A former student of the Design Academy in Eindhoven, Dave Hakkens, received the Young Designer Award at the Klokgebouw last Saturday night. This award is an incentive prize for young talented designers.
Hakkens graduated from the Design Academy last year and works as an industrial designer. He gained international attention for his Phonebloks, a concept which entails that mobile phones are built up from a kind of Lego bricks. This means that, if a part breaks down, only this particular ‘brick’ has to be replaced, instead of the entire phone. Furthermore, his recycling project Precious Plastics also got international recognition.
The jury not only awarded Hakkens for his design qualities, but also for his involvement and the fact that he has managed to mobilize large groups of people to think about modular systems.
