Cars make way for new residential tower block TU/e

We have known this for a while now: a new residential tower block for students is going to be built in the car park and the events section, near Volt, Traverse and the space boxes. Student housing corporation Vestide and the TU/e already announced its construction in september 2011. After years of planning, tendering and getting all the permits, building work will finally commence next month.

At this stage only preparatory work will be undertaken: the so-called ‘site preparation’. The actual construction of Vestide’s fourteen-storey residential tower block is going to start no sooner than next year.

Because the building has been planned on the site of a car park and a connecting road, the area must first be cleared of obstacles such as trees and street furniture. The road also has to be moved a little, which will be ready at the end of July.

Quite a few parking spaces will disappear, but this has already been compensated for elsewhere, namely around Laplace and the area between Connector, IPO and Paviljoen.

The construction of the tower block itself will take about a year. Completion is expected mid 2016. The building will provide accommodation for nearly three hundred students and is part of the housing programme Campus 2020. The building Potentiaal will also be converted into housing facilities.

In time, between six and seven hundred students will be living on the TU/e campus. Once the homes are completed, the outdated space boxes on the Lismortel will be demolished.
