EINDHOVEN – Two entomologists discovered a very rare and bright red beetle in a nature reserve near Eindhoven. This was announced at Sunday morning’s radio show ‘Vroege Vogels’ (early birds).
The beetle is called ‘vermiljoenkever’. This name was made up last week; it is called Cucujus cinnaberinus in Latin. The beetle was never spotted in the Netherlands before, is fairly rare in Europe and originally comes from Hungary. The men discovered the saproxylic beetles in January, behind the bark of two oak trees. The ´vermiljoenkever´ is between 1 and 1.5 centimeter long. Source: Eindhoven Dichtbij
