The municipality wants to ban releasing balloons into the air as part of sustainability efforts.

The release of balloons, especially larger bunches at public gatherings, has been a topic of social debate for several years. A ban would contribute to a sustainable environment, as well as supporting municipal, national, European, and global ambitions.

The municipality also hopes to raise awareness about the negative effect balloons have on the environment.

Released balloons eventually return to nature, leading to litter problems, environmental pollution, animal suffering, and fire hazards, according to the municipality. On top of this, balloons using an open flame are fire hazards that pose a safety risk.

The municipality conceded that prosecuting individual violations would be difficult, stating that it plans to focus on larger operations.

The ban is scheduled to take effect by the end of the year.
