A 37-year-old man from Geldrop has been sentenced to two years in prison. This comes after he attacked another man with a hatchet at a gym in Geldrop is December 2018.

The victim sustained a head injury and a broken arm as he tried to protect himself against the blows.

But it did not end there. The attacker’s 15-year-old stepson also threatened the victim with a knife and kicked him. He later made a false report to the police, where he falsely claimed that the victim had cut him with the knife. The 15-year-old boy received a 60-hour suspended sentence.

The punishment for the boy is so low as the judge ruled that he was not thinking for himself, but was influenced by his stepfather. The judge stated that getting relevant help and support for the boy is more important than punishing him.

‘No respect for human life’

The judge was not so lenient for the stepfather. The judge said that he should be thankful that no deaths occurred during the fight.

‘With this act, the suspect showed a serious lack of respect for human life. He is not afraid of using forceful violence against others. Additionally, this happened in a public place where others could have been harmed,’ the judge continued.

What caused the altercation between the three men to erupt still remains unclear.
