Pegida wants to demonstrate again

The anti-Islamic organisation, Pegida, has announced a new demonstration: the club wants to demonstrate in Eindhoven again on Saturday.

The new announcement comes in response to Thursday’s protest being prohibited. On Monday night, Mayor Jorritsma announced that he would not allow Pegida to demonstrate on that day. He sees a demonstration during the Suikerfeest – the end of Ramadan or Eid-al-Fitr – as a deliberate provocation. He also fears riots. Earlier, the protest planned for last weekend was also forbidden; then because it was not requested in time.

Pegida calls the Mayor’s reasons, “excuses”. “Eid-al-Fitr is more important to the Mayor than native Dutch people’s right to demonstrate”, the organisation writes on their Facebook page. Therefore, plans for a new demonstration were immediately announced: “then it is not Ramadan or Eid-al-Fitr and on time.”
