The Southeast Brabant GGD (Public Health Service) started the second round of its vaccination campaign against meningococcal disease on Tuesday.
Teenagers born in 2003 or 2005 got a notification to get vaccinated. Youngsters who received a previous notification, but did not show up, received a repeat summons.
The kids are being vaccinated against meningococcal ACWY (blood poisoning or septicaemia and meningitis A, C, W and Y). Of these, type W is especially dangerous. The bacteria can cause meningitis and blood poisoning.
The campaign is aimed primarily at teenagers, as they relatively often carry the bacteria, and are, therefore, more likely to develop the disease. Also, the bacteria is spread more easily by teenagers.
In total, more than 40,000 young people in the region have been called upon to be vaccinated.
