TU/e, police join forces against pickpockets

The police, together with the TU/e, have started a test to track criminals, using data.

This experiment concerns the roving bands of international groups of criminals who, for instance, pickpocket people in shopping centres. The groups behave, more or less, in the same manner. By combining data from number plates, camera images, and social media reports, it is hoped these thieves can be recognised sooner.

Will be tested in Roermond

The experiment started on Wednesday in, among other places, the Roermond town centre. This town has a ‘serious problem’ with pickpocketers. Mykola Pechenizkiy, a Data Mining lecturer at the TU/e will lead a scientific team. They will help police analyse the collected data.
